Goodbye, Winter

Dress: ModCloth / Skirt as Slip: Gap / Belt, Necklace: Ruche / Boots: Ugg / Shoes: J Crew via DownEast / Watch: Fossil / Bag: Bunco Prize

This winter was fairly mild compared to last year, and I think { fingers crossed } it's finally over. Blossoms and sunshine are finally in abundance. We no longer huddle in the smallest room of our house around the electric heater. Nor do we need our mattress warmer. Getting out of the shower is no longer the hardest part of the day, and I no longer dread coming home to a freezing house. Merci, merci, merci, Madame Spring for coming earli(er) this year! In return for such kindness, I feel I must bid a proper adieu to Old Man Winter. I won't be missing his icy greetings any time soon. Or ever, actually. In fact, I'd be perfectly satisfied to get my fill of snow at Crater Lake each year if he'd just leave me alone.

We love to hit up Crater Lake for a nice after-church drive, and wanted to get up there for a last look at the snow. A few thoughts:

1) I purchased this dress with this particular lake in mind. I may have bought it in hopes of entering a photo contest to win a gift card, which would in effect pay for the dress and leave me extra for some other lovely. Then the contest closed before the dress arrived. Boo.
2) The snow didn't get as high as last year along the roadside. Evidently, this displeases me.
3) My birthday shoes, snagged at DownEast for under $30, are way slicker at modeling than I am.

4) I love my Husband and Hound. And Spring! Le printemps, je t'adore!*

And yes, this is their new official pose.

Wrap it up...

Dress: B Moss / 3/4S Top: Shade / Tights: We Love Colors / Earrings: DC Street Market / Bracelets: J Crew final sale / Shoes: Miz Mooz via Amazon.com

Wrap dresses are so heavenly-ly { it could be a word } comfortable, but let's face it. They're not always the most exciting play in the book. Or closet. So my analogies need a bit of work.

To punch up one of my favorite, silky smooth, comfort-must-reign today dresses for a cold, thus-far dreary spring, I added colorful tights and earrings with a three-quarter sleeved top for warmth.

And you know what? I think it worked. In fact, I thought it worked so well that I did it again. This time the dress was already sleeved, and I just added tangerine tango { thank you, Pantone } tights with a bright necklace.

Dress, Shoes: Gabes (Ann Taylor, .....)  / Tights: J Crew final sale / Necklace: Dillard's gift card / Coat: DownEast

It kind of looks like my legs are on fire...or just really, really sunburned. Un coup de soleil? Non, merci!*

And that reminds me of how much I detest being told by practically everyone I ever cross on a sunny day that I'd better "watch out" in the sun. Because of my red hair of course.

Just for the record, I can only wish I had the delicate, porcelain skin most red-heads get, and I do know how to use sunblock, thankyouverymuch.

Sheesh. Bitter much? I think it's been a looooong week...I promise I'm not this touchy in person.

Valentine's Date Night

Blouse: Vintage Oleg Cassini / Tank: Thrifted LOFT / Skirt: Express clearance ($13!) / Purse: Express via Gabes / Faux Fur Coat: Consigned at Periwinkle / Shoes: 6pm (TCP) / Watch: Fossil / Bracelets, Belt: J Crew final sale / Earrings: AE

After a few years together, date nights start to blend in with the norm { Yea. It happens...}  This is especially true when you live in the middle of nowhere and your husband rarely consents to ice-skating, which is the only fun feature your town offers. So for Valentine's this year, I put together few fun little date nights...

1. Make some peanut-butter play-dough-- mix PB, confectioner's sugar, dry milk, and honey-- and check out what's new on your favorite funny site. I Can Haz Cheezburger, Failblog, People of Walmart, or one of Ryan Gosling's many "Hey Girl" memes are all valid options { I like the Literary and Feminist versions, but dang. Handmade and Silicone Valley Ryan are a riot. } Use your play-dough to sculpt some of the funnier pictures for pictionary. Then eat them.

2. Take your Hound { any medium dog will do } to the playground. Put her in a kiddie swing and swing her. Pretend not to notice the staring parents of real kids. Then put your Hound down the slide. Clap with glee. Praise her vociferously. And don't forget to snap lots of pictures. Then stop suddenly and race each other to the car. Pick up some fro-yo on the way home and laugh wildly at the pics.

3. Pull a mattress or memory-foam topper in front of the television, make a fort, light a bunch of candles, and watch a favorite movie. Take turns giving massages and camp out for the night. Or for a month, if you're like us.

4. Teach your man how to apply your makeup. Let him make up categories and have his fun. Then have him teach you how to tie a tie. Bonus points for strapping him to the bed.

5. Play Blackjack. Strip Blackjack. You deal. Heh-heh.

Testing has proven these to be quite agreeable :)

 Joyeuse Saint-Valentin!

Pink + Red | Everybody, Everywear

P.S. In honor of St. Valentine, it's Red Day over at Bloggers do it Better and Red & Pink Day over at Everybody, Everywear. Red & pink and I are bffs already, in case you didn't know. We went to school together today { and to church on Sunday-- I can't take outdoor photos on winter school days.}

We also went to school together yesterday and we went to a party this past weekend.

At Christmastime we attended an imaginary soirée together, and last summer we frolicked in a field.

We've even gone to the coast together.

{And tonight we're gonna play #5 with the Husband.}

It's getting serious.

P.S. Express is having one of their "Take an extra 40% off clearance" sales right now! Could make a fun V-Day gift to yourself. Just sayin'!

Thankful

Dress: Consigned at Periwinkle (Trinity) / Top: Gap / Pants: Macys (Union Bay) / Belt: J Crew Outlet / Booties: Blowfish / Jewelry: F21

This was our very first Thanksgiving all by ourselves. The Husband was on call, so we couldn't go anywhere. I very briefly considered taking it easy since I spent the first part of the week out East for my cousin's wedding. I'm oh so glad I didn't. We've been relishing leftovers for days. This meal will keep on giving for almost a week :)

My little feast surprised me. Many thanks to Jennie-O for an easy peasy turkey with a pop-up timer, All-Recipes for a delicious seasoning blend and whole-wheat rolls, Safeway for whole wheat stuffing mix on clearance, Meta Given for a silky smooth pumpkin pie recipe, and my grandma for teaching me how to make crust {though mine is never as pretty as hers was.} Thanks to my favorite little consignment shop for my perfectly modern Pilgrim of an outfit for $13, to my Slurpee Hound for her warm snuggles on cold nights {and for putting up with my sweater-gifts}, and to my Scott for cutting wood, keeping our stove toasty warm, and consenting to a weekend of chick-flicks with me.  But most of all, thank-you to my kind and gracious Father in Heaven, for providing me with so many lovelies for which to be thankful.

P.S. The Husband wore his fuzzies all day. In honor of the feast, of course. So no family picture. But we did get a good one of the Hound, all festive in her new holiday sweater whilst watching for scraps. She's a hawk when poultry's afoot.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mixed Prints: Yes, Another 30x30 Interlude

Dress: B Moss / Top: F21 / Scarf: Charlotte Russe / Shoes: J Crew final sale ($15!) / Bracelet, Earrings: Gabes / Bangles: AE

HOW is it time for another EBEW already? C'est pas possible!* I've done a measly three posts since the last one. I can't wait to get this 30x30 behind me. It's actually finished; I just haven't finished posting it. Because the Europe posts take for-ev-a. And I'm trying to get my house in order and take care of things at home, since I've been away most of the summer. Piles of classroom clutter litters my floor as I type. I'm pretending it's not there.

So, down to business. I've been voting for color blocking the past few months and was disappointed it still hasn't won {seriously, how did it not beat yellow? I love yellow and all...but still.} I really just want it to win because it's something I've yet to blog. I've done mixed prints. Or maybe I just want an excuse to buy one of those super cute color blocked dresses out there...

Either way, I embraced defeat and pulled out this old printed wrap dress, threw a stripey shirt and flowery scarf on top and a dotted slip underneath, and bada bing. Loads of mixed prints, all in one outfit. Yet my favorite part is the solid shoes. Extra 40% off of final sale and free shipping with no min. Thank you, J Crew for making my summer. I stuck with a color theme to pull my outfit together, but now I'm wishing I'd been brave enough {or had clothes cool enough} to try something like this.

Everybody, Everywear | Pattern Mixing

P.S. By tomorrow I'd like to have ready my posts for Outfit 12 at the Villa Carlotta and 13 at the 50s-style Cuccaro Club in Italy. But there's a plane ticket with my name on it heading East bright and early tomorrow, so we'll see. I'm spending a week with my family and attending my first class reunion. Remember this dress? Well, I won it. And found some more cost efficient coral shoes and lipstick to go with it. Can't wait to try it out:)

Vintage & Cupcakes

Dress: Thrifted at Annie Cream Cheese (J Crew)  / Heels: Sears clearance / Cardigan: Gabes (Express) / Necklace: France Vintage

Seven for Spring Break

1.  The Husband didn't get to come. Why doesn't everyone get a spring break? Why?
2.  I didn't relax on an East coast beach, like in my college days.
Oh, how I miss you, Ocean City, Chincoteague, OBX, Myrtle, Hilton Head, Cocoa, etc...
3.  I did enjoy old musicals with my mom and National Geographic with my dad.
Who can resist Doris Day and sea critters?
4.  I didn't take advantage of the hot-tub in my sister's new home. T'es dingue*, Cassandra! Dingue!
5.  I did teach my cousins to play Settlers of Catan. I didn't win.
6.  I did take a road trip with my bro and shop with my sisters. I've got 3! Isn't that fun?!
7.  I did stay 3 days in DC with my adorably preggo cousin where we enjoyed vintage and cupcakes!

Per the title, this post is about lucky number 7. My brother and I, the rogue westerners of the family, planned our trip home together and headed to our cousin's place in DC first. We chatted till the wee hours catching up and reminiscing the old days playing police with the food storage in our grandparents' basement {You know, where patrolling police throw citizens in the prison under the stairs unless they've gathered sufficient nutritional content for their doll family. Oh, you don't know? It's great fun.}

We explored the city, dined at Bertucci's in Old Town Alexandria and Bistrot du Coin in in Dupont Circle, {highly recommend both}, met up with mutual friends {Great to see you, Steph!}, and chatted up pregnancy while riding the Metro. I relished in the warm weather and city atmosphere {it makes me feel alive} and feasted on visions of popcorn and cherry blossoms, green hills and deciduous trees.

But best of all, we went on an expedition for vintage and cupcakes in Georgetown. Ah, Georgetown. How I've dreamed of living in an apartment above a quaint shop with wrought iron and potted flowers around my windows, tucked amongst twinkling lights, pastel hotels, elegant, artsy, and funky shops and eateries, and 3-story brick homes with private, blooming gardens.

Our first stop was supposed to be Georgetown Cupcake, also known as DC Cupcakes on their TLC show. But on our way, we came to an Annie Cream Cheese! Eeeeeeee! Cream cheese is the perfect name, because it's decadent, rich, and scrumptious. Just like the vintage apparel found in this little gem of a boutique.

I was on Cloud 9, I tell you. Fancy schmancy to the extreme vintage jewels and hats, glitzy dresses, shoes, scarves, and even unders in form of bustiers and petticoats! I so badly wanted to have a place to which I could appropriately wear these lovelies! The only part that wasn't so fabulous was the prices. We're talking vintage couture here, which translates to prices in the hundreds, even several hundreds. So after a brief  peek at the designer duds, and an illegal photo {we didn't see the sign till after...and please pardon my plastered hair...}

...we moved on to the more modestly priced, non-designer pieces. We're still talking up to $100, with pieces old and newer. Lots of polka dots, ruffles, taffeta, and lace. My mission was to find something {I simply had to find something} under $20. At the last minute I found the dress I'm wearing in the photo up top and below for $15. It had just a small problem. It was petite and featured a side zip that I couldn't zip the last few inches over my ribs! Sucking in only made it worse. But I said "To Hades with you, petite waist" and bought it. It's from Annie Cream Cheese, people! I was hoping a cardi would hide my zipper issue.  I think it worked spectacularly!

While we fawned over the vintage, my bro got in line at DC Cupcakes. We thus commenced our cupcake tour. After D.C.'s, we hit up Baked & Wired, a new hot spot in town, and Sprinkles, which originated in Beverly Hills as the world's first cupcake bakery. One had recently opened where my brother lives in Cali and he'd waited 2 hours to get cupcakes for his girlfriend. The one here had been open a week, and we, fortunately, didn't wait long at all. Here's the breakdown of our Delectable Cupcake Tour:

Georgetown (DC) Cupcakes:  We got Pumpkin Spice, Ringling Brother's Red Velvet, and Key Lime. Best: Key Lime. Cost: $2.50 each. Size: Small. Aura: Fluffy. Evidence: Lots of pink; fresh flowers on tables.

Baked & Wired: We got Strawberry, German Chocolate, and Menage à Trois (chocolate, cream cheese, & raspberry). My fav: Strawberry. Cost: $3.00 each. Size: Large. Aura: Funky. Evidence: The chocolate peanut butter cupcake I photographed for the Husband, who'd appreciate the flavor and name play:

Sprinkles: We got Chocolate Banana, Coconut, and Vanilla Milk Chocolate. Favorite: Coconut. Cost: $3.50 each. Size: Medium. Aura: Hollywood green. Evidence: Classy decor; natural ingredients & vegan options.

I recommend all 3 establishments for the experience. Baked & Wired, however, won my heart, or rather, my taste-buds. Theirs was the largest, the cake was dense and moist, and the icing was confection perfection. Sprinkles was second, only because they were pricier and a bit smaller. Georgetown/DC was definitely third. Their cakes were rather dry and the taste just didn't knock my socks off.

There's an also a cupcake bakery at the National Harbor and we saw another in Dupont Circle. DC's been hit hard with the cupcake fad, and I intend to enjoy it to the fullest. I'm already planning cupcakes into my next visit to meet the baby.

As we strolled down M street, checking out the vintage and cupcakes, we came across a thrift shop called Second Time Around that looked promising {ie: in my price range.} I got a springy baby-blue tweed skirt and flowery wrap skirt for $15 total, which I'll feature later since this post is already tantamount to Les Mis in length.

My new dream in life: To own a vintage thrift shoppe {spelled just so} with a cupcake bakery, selling vintage named cupcakes. Can't you just taste the Strawberry Chantilly, Lemon Seersucker, Pinup Poppy Seed, Antiqued Pumpkin, Crêpe de Chine Salted Caramel, and Rustic Red Velvet now? I'd also like to offer a styling service within my shop. And make lots of money, so the Husband can go on spring breaks with me. And so we can travel the world. Extensively. And pay for our hound to ride in the plane's cabin with us {she was traumatized after her first flight in cargo, and we won't be doing that again.} There, is that so much to ask for? ;)

Oh, how I miss living near D.C. and springtime back East! One day, when the Husband and I are old and withered, perhaps we'll live in Georgetown for a bit. We'll ride bicycles with wicker baskets to the market. We'll grow vegetables from a little garden. We'll wear vintage and eat decadent, frivolous cupcakes every single day.

Meanwhile, I've got to stop making cupcakes. I made strawberry champagne almond cupcakes twice last week {recipe here, but substitute natural applesauce for oil, instead of 3 egg whites use 2 whole eggs and 1 tbsp milled flaxseed + 3 tbsp water, add 1 cup of ground almonds to batter, use strawberry champagne instead of red, and for the frosting use almond extract instead of vanilla and only 3 cups of sugar.} I've had cupcakes for breakfast and lunch far too many days in a row to admit to...

P.S. Post linked here at Tiff's cute party and here for All Dressed Up!

Le Rat de Champs: Small Town Thrifting

Recently, I've gotten to be both a city rat and a country rat. Do you know the story of the city rat and the country rat? It's really quite enchanting. Let me acquaint you with Monsieur Jean de la Fontaine. Here's where you say Enchanté* to him and Merci* to me for introducing you to such a fine fellow. He's responsible for all sorts of famous fables about animals, like this one that forms the basis of the plot behind A Bug's Life. Yeah. He's that big. Disney big. He's like France's Mother Goose, but with clear morals and meaning. Not that it isn't interesting to theorize on whether anthropomorphized eating utensils running off together while a little dog, moon-jumping cow, and fiddle playing cat are hanging around is simply pure nonsense, a poor translation of ancient Greek, or a clever way to eternalize the scandalous relationships of European nobility. It's just not very meaningful. La Fontaine gives you meaning.

Pardonez-moi* for the long digression. Back to my story. First, I was a country mouse. I went small town thrifting. And got some amazing deals. Like this DKNY skirt for $2.50, this goes-with-everything-feels-like-silk tank from The Limited for 99 cents, and this sequin bedazzled top for $2:

Skirt, Top, Tank: Thrifted / Cardi: Ross (BCBG) / Tights: TJ Maxx / Shoes: Maurices / Necklace: Elder Beerman / White Light: Midday Sun

Yes, those prices are sans error. In fact, I didn't pay more than $2.50 for anything save this fancy (do you see those bejeweled buttons?) velvet jacket, which was $3. I got the skirt that's paired with it for $1...

Jacket, Skirt: Thrifted / 3/4 Sleeved Top: Down East / Sleeveless Top: Gap / Boots: Ross (Apepazza) / Bracelet: Vintage / Earrings: Gabes (1928)

I also found this jean skirt from AE for $2.50...

Skirt: Thrifted / Button-up: Gap ($7 steal!) / Cardi: NY & Co. (also a $7 steal!) / Shoes: Sperry's / Necklace: AE

...and I nabbed this casual skirt from Old Navy, also for $2.50...

Skirt: Thrifted / Belt: J. Crew final sale / Top: F21 / Shoes: Sperry's / Necklace: AE

Made out like a bandit in Tiffany's, I did. Okay, maybe not a Tiffany's. Maybe more like Jared's. (Nothing against Jared, though their commercials do bug me a bit.) But still.

I really must give props to the Husband. We were killing a bit of time before a movie when he pulled into a lot to turn around and saw that the shop's name was Sequel and there was women's clothing in the window. I took little notice, but my dear husband said, "Hey, that looks like a thrift store. Do you wanna go in?" And I did. And it was amazing. Like, the very best from Goodwill but in a cleaner and trendier environment. And with unbelievable prices. I found a new frequent haunt. Yay :)

Up next: a post about my turn as a city mouse, thrifting in Portland!

P.S. I acknowledge that I totally lied on my first post when I said the next one would be about the purge of my closet, but here's a photo to prove that I have actually commenced! I've turned our guest room into donation central. It's still a work in progress. I've yet more to add, and a post to come describing the painful process, but here's what I have so far:
